Survey results highlight biopharma's concern over virtual medical congresses in the time of COVID-19

Blue Bell, Pa. – A recent survey conducted by Omni Healthcare Communications (Omni-HC) uncovered biopharma’s unfavorable perceptions of the future of medical congresses and the effectiveness of alternative approaches. The results of the Omni-HC survey mirrored other previously conducted surveys with healthcare providers and their opinions of the loss of medical congresses.

In the survey, the vast majority of respondents indicated they believed that virtual congresses are less beneficial in the exchange of medical and scientific information than a live conference, with 58% responding that virtual congresses have less than 50% of the live conference benefit.

“It is staggering at how little benefit virtual congresses are viewed by biopharma personnel in this survey,” commented Mike Caso, managing partner of Omni-HC. “It is a good indicator that biopharma will need to identify new ways to convey scientific and medical information,” Caso added.

“This result is indicative of what we have been thinking all along and we are actively identifying new virtual approaches for biopharma data and information dissemination,” said Steve Casey, the other managing partner of Omni-HC. “Although the virtual environment can be less engaging than the in-person meeting, we have discovered ways to derive and measure the scientific exchange benefit,” Casey continued.

The Omni-HC survey also found 73% of biopharma respondents don’t believe annual medical congresses will resume before the end of the year.

About the survey

The Omni-HC survey was conducted over the month of April 2020 using an online survey platform. Only respondents who identified themselves as working in the pharmaceutical industry were used in the total response calculations.
